AWG and SWG to mm and inch wire size conversion

Drawings, technical documents and specifications often describe the wire size in American Wire Gauge (AWG) or Standard Wire Gauge (SWG). However, most coil winding machines are programmed in millimetres or inches. Our fast and convenient calculator will make the conversion for you.

Use the Yellow cell to input your wire size, and press the "calculate" button. The Blue cells will then show the conversion.

As an "added extra", we also calculate the Cross Sectional Area (CSA) of this wire size.

  AWG to millimetre conversion:
Wire Diameter in AWG excluding insulation (AWG 1 - AWG 56)
Equivalent wire size:
Ø mm Ø inches
Cross sectional area:
mm^2 inches^2

  SWG to millimetre conversion:
Wire Diameter in SWG excluding insulation (SWG 1 - SWG 50)
Equivalent wire size: Ø mm Ø inches
Cross sectional area: mm^2 inches^2

  Millimetre to AWG conversion:
Wire Diameter in mm excluding insulation (0.01 - 8.0mm)
Equivalent wire size: AWG Ø inches
Cross sectional area: mm^2 inches^2
